Suncor Energy employees discovered a ruptured pipeline carrying toxic waste water had been leaking into a pond next to the Athabasca river. It is estimated that 350,000 litres of ‘process-affected’ water was released over a period of 10 hours before the pipeline was shut down.
March 27:
Fourteen cars on a 94-car Canadian Pacific train left the tracks about 150 miles north west of Minneapolis near the town of Parkers Prairie spilling 120,000 litres of tar sands bitumen.
March 29:
The ExxonMobil Pegasus pipeline, which brings Canadian crude oil from Illinois to Texas, ruptured leaking at least 336,000 litres of oil into the Central Arkansas town of Mayflower. The leak forced the evacuation of 22 homes.
